ILP "Design"- Edmodo

For my third independent learning project I created a class profile on Edmodo. I had never heard of this site before this class and it has become one of my favorite tools we have learned about! Edmodo allows teachers to create a facebook-like page for their classes which contains different groups. The groups can be used for different classes or subjects. For example, I created a page for a 5th grade class and included three different groups on my page, "Morning Bell Ringers", "Class Announcements" and "Helpful Tools". The main page shows you all of the recent activity but clicking on the different groups will bring you to a feed specific to that group. I think it is a great way to keep class materials organized and easily accessible.

(2) ILP "Design"-Prezi

For my second independent learning project I decided to use Prezi to create a lesson fit for a second grade class. This was my first time using Prezi and I really enjoyed it! I think I will use this program instead of powerpoint in the future because I like the different templates it offers!

As a future teacher I could use data collection and reporting tools in many different ways. I think it would be beneficial to use data collection in order to assess my students knowledge prior to beginning a lesson as well as their understanding of it after the lesson. Once I have the data I could use a reporting tool such as excel to keep it organized and analyze it by plugging in equations. I could use this with any grade level or subject matter.

I found reviewing my classmates blogs to be interesting regardless of the topic. Blogging allows individuals to express their thoughts and ideas on a topic freely which is why I enjoy it so much! Reading their ideas made me take different perspectives into consideration and allowed me to think critically about my views!

I would like learn how to become more efficient in excel. I know how to use the basic functions but at this point I really only know how to enter in data and calculate a few different equations. Learning more about it would allow me to analyze data in many different ways!

Chapter 10 explains the concept of a flipped class room as an "innovative blended delivery model that is being used in both K-12 and postsecondary classrooms. In a flipped classroom, students listen to prerecorded video lectures for homework before coming to class. This allows them to spend time in the classroom as active learners instead of passive receivers. I have included a link below that is a great source for educational videos that teachers could assign as homework!

Open education broadens the access to the learning and training offered in traditional education systems so that individuals can access it without actually attending the school or university. Open content is information that is freely shared by an individual to be reused, revised, remixed or redistributed. Open Source is software that is made available for people to use. It is commonly free and is a great source for people who are working on a limited budget. If you are interested in learning more about this terms I have included a ling below!

By completing the two powerpoint assignments I learned how to use many features in powerpoint that I didn't even know existed. One of these skills included creating action buttons! I have seen them used in presentations before but I didn't know what they were called or how I could create them myself. Action buttons are extremely useful when creating interactive powerpoints such as quizzes! The only thing I didn't like about assignment 6 was that it was a group project. My group decided to use powerpoint online in order to share our work but unfortunately that limited the features we had to use. Regardless of this set back, we were able to complete our assignment and I learned a lot in the process!

The Assistive Technology Lab that we toured before spring break contained a lot of technologies that would be beneficial in school. Although I don't remember what they were called, I thought that the text magnifier and the program that changed the color of the computer screen would be most beneficial for classroom use. These technologies would allow students with certain disabilities to be included and follow along with the rest of the class. I think it is important that schools have the technology necessary to meet the needs of their students in order to ensure that all students are supported and given the tools they need to be successful.

The structure of Blooms Taxonomy allows teachers to accommodate a variety of students’ needs by applying the appropriate questions and activities for children so that they may equally participate in a lesson. Teachers can use powerpoint to support learning at each level by incorporating things such as definitions, explanations, discussions, activities and so on in ones presentation.

Education World contains numerous articles covering technology in the classroom ranging from whats new, advancements in existing technologies, how to incorporate technology into your classroom and much more. I think it is a great way to keep up with technological trends as well as get a better understanding of said technologies and use them in ones classroom too.

Adaptive technologies allow students with disabilities or students who are gifted to increase their independence, participation and success in classroom activities. These technologies can help students write, read, do math, and much more and without them, some students would not be able to follow the standard curriculum. While I have never known anyone who has used adaptive technologies, I think they are extremely helpful for those who need them and should be incorporated into any classroom that sees a use for them regardless of any challenges a teacher may perceive. Although I've never used any of these technologies, I could see learning how to properly use them as a challenge one may encounter. It is important to overcome this challenge so your students are provided with the support they need and given the opportunity to reach their full potential.

I learned a lot from working on the web page design assignment. While I have heard of weebly, this assignment allowed me to learn how to use the website builder properly. It was really easy to navigate and allowed me to incorporate whatever I wanted into my web page such as forms, blogs, audio and video. I would like to continue working with this site because there were a few things I could not figure out how to do including separating text into columns. The information I have learned by completing this assignment will transfer to my future career because it is likely I will have to create an actual class page at some point. I have included a screen shot of my web page as well as the link! Feel free to check it out.

Before this class I didn't know that social bookmarking existed. By using Diigo I have learned how to bookmark and annotate different sites and share them with others such as our class group. This application will be useful in my future classroom because I can use it similarly to the way we do in class. Diigo is a quick and easy way to share information with a group.

(1) ILP "Participation" - Lynda.com

For my first Independent Learning Project I completed a Lynda tutorial on incorporating educational technology into the classroom. Before this assignment I had never heard of Lynda Online Training or that it is free for FSU students! I learned a lot from this tutorial and I highly recommend that any FSU students take advantage of this resource while it is readily available to us!

The tutorial I completed was called "Educational Technology for Student Success". It covered a few main points that one should consider when incorporating educational technology into their classroom as well as overviews of different resources that one could use. The main points it covered overlapped with a lot of the material we have talked about in class, including copyright and fair use, so that part was more of a review for me. However, including tutorials on how to use different resource, such as google forms, was extremely helpful. The tutorial not only showed me how to properly use a lot of popular tools, but it gave numerous alternatives so you could decide which site would best meet your purpose and needs.

By completing this tutorial I learned how to use a lot of really cool tools that will be extremely helpful in the classroom. For example, teachers often assign quizzes to assess their students knowledge. Google forms will allow me to create quizzes and see my students responses quickly and easily if we have access to computers in my future classroom. Here is an example of a vocabulary quiz I created using google forms!

For this assignment I looked at the St. Clare Schools class pages. Many of the pages were set up the similarly to the one pictured below and contained information that was directed towards parents. The page I selected was for a kindergarten class. Its home page contained all of their upcoming events and homework for quick access. I was also able to see announcements from the teacher, all of the homework assignments given throughout the year, and documents that needed to be filled out by parents. I thought it was very clever to upload permission slips and other important forms under the "documents" tab so parents can easily access another copy incase the original form is misplaced.

As a teacher I believe I will be using many types of technology to accomplish my professional responsibilities efficiently and effectively. I will use things such as word processing programs, electronic spreadsheets, presentation software and much more. These technologies will help me create classroom materials, stay organized, and present information.

I found the smart board to be the most useful piece of technology we worked with in the technology sandbox. While all of the other tools we got to work with were fun and useful, I think the smart board would be most helpful in a classroom. I feel this way because it was versatile. one piece of technology can be used as a whiteboard, projector, interactive game center and much more. All of these things would be great to have in a classroom!

I think the use of web 2.0 tools is extremely important in the classroom as a means for teachers and students to interact and share with each other. In my opinion, using youtube and blogs would be very useful as a teacher. By using youtube, a teacher could easily access videos that could supplement their lessons and clarify any questions students may have. Blogs are a great way to get all students involved in discussion.

I had never heard of library thing until this discussion board so I decided to look it up. Library thing is a social cataloging app for storing and sharing books and catalogs. It makes it incredibly easy to interact with groups of people who share common interests in reading material. This could be useful for a teacher because they could access numerous reviews on books when deciding what to assign their students. If you're interested in this tool i suggest learning more about it at https://www.librarything.com

When reading chapter 12, I found myself really interested in some of the technological advances it addressed. I thought electronic paper was a really great idea that would not only be extremely useful in a classroom but make a big impact on the environment as well. Electronic paper would make it extremely easy to distribute worksheets and other materials in class without wasting a large amount of paper.

Although I did not have a twitter account before this class, this site has proven to be very easy to maneuver and I have enjoy using it so far. I have mostly been interacting with a few students in class and some education pages. By checking twitter I am reminded of upcoming assignments which I find to be the most beneficial aspect! I could use twitter for my future career by using it the way we do for EME2040. If I created a twitter account for my students to follow I could tweet reminders about assignments and share resources that would be beneficial to them.

The digital divide can have a tremendous impact on a students success in school. Having little or no access to computers and other technology outside of school and lacking the knowledge of how to use it can create disparity between students in similar situations compared to those who have these resources readily available. As a future teacher I must be aware of the fact that I will have students from different backgrounds. The podcast spoke about how different SES can impact the digital divide so I cannot assume that each student has access to the latest technologies once they go home.  With this being said, I will give a lesson on how to properly use the technology my students will have access to before I give any assignments. I will also provide my students an ample amount of time to get their assignments done in class if they require the use of technology from our classroom.

Since I plan on working with elementary aged children, I think I will be using educational games and tutorial software the most in my classes. I like educational games and tutorials because they are interactive and incorporate graphics, animation, and audio or video clips. I think this would be a great way to capture my students attention and keep their focus until they complete the lesson. I do not think I will be using academic databases with this age group. Research projects that require scholarly articles would not be an appropriate assignment for K-5th grade students.

The ELA standard I feel most prepared to teach with using my existing knowledge is SL.5 "Use of Digital Media". For this standard, one is expected to use digital media and visual displays to express information in a way that enhances the students understanding. I have used textual, graphical, audio, visual and interactive elements when creating presentations in the past. I incorporated digital media into my presentations in order to clarify information, emphasize main points, and add interest. I would feel confident teaching to this standard without further learning. I feel comfortable with the other standards as well!

I really like the idea of using weblogs in the classroom as a way for students to express their ideas and share them with their classmates. Since I hope to work with 3rd-5th graders, a blog would also serve as an organizational tool since all of their work could be saved in one place. I could implement the use of a web blog in my classroom by having weekly discussion questions where they post their own thoughts and answers directly to their blog. However, I would not introduce this technology into my classroom until my students know and understand the importance of good digital citizenship. I would teach them how to participate responsibly and appropriately.

By completing the Newsletter Design assignment I've acquired new skills that proved to be extremely helpful when creating a newsletter or using Microsoft Word in general. These skills include creating a hyperlink and formatting the text of your document into columns! Although I've learned a lot, I did have some trouble completing this assignment on a Mac. Some on the skills we learned in class did not work on my laptop. Overall, I felt like my Mac was more difficult to use so I will use a PC for future assignments in order to eliminate the problems I ran into! I will be able to use these skills for my future career in a variety of ways. As a teacher, I will need to send out emails, newsletters, permission slips and much more to parents on a regular basis. I have attached a picture of my newsletter for your viewing! The background color is light blue on the original document but it did not transfer for some reason. Enjoy!

MS word is an extremely versatile program. As a student I use MS Word almost every day. I often use this program to take notes in an organized manner, create study guides, chapter outlines and much more. Just the other day I created a calendar using one of the templates in MS Word. I primarily see teachers using this program to create documents that they can attach to emails and upload onto Black Board. It is a great way to gather information in one place that is easily accessed and shared.

Although I encounter copyrighted materials on a daily basis, I can't say I knew much about copyright and fair use before reading and listening to this weeks materials. To stay on the safe side I've always just made sure I gave proper attribution by including a works cited page for most of my assignments. Copyright laws govern what can or cannot be used in the classroom and fair use is a set of guidelines that allow users to copy materials for nonprofit educational materials. However there are limits to what materials you use and how much. As a teacher I would deal with these concepts by considering all materials to be potentially copyrighted and teach my students the importance of referencing their source.

The digital divide is a huge factor to keep in mind when trying to implement technology into the classroom. As a future teacher I will encounter students from all different backgrounds. There will be students with access to computers and other technology outside of the classroom and others who do not have these resources readily available. In order to ensure none of my future students fall behind, I will only assign work using technology that is readily available in my classroom and make sure the students have ample time to complete these assignments during school hours.

Cyber bullying is another implementation issue that one may see as we try to bring technology into the classroom. In order to decrease and eventually eliminate this social problem, I will raise awareness of this problem to my students by teaching them what cyberbullying is, how to recognize it, and how to deal with it if they notice it occurring or experience it themselves.

Academic dishonesty is a major ethical issue that I will take very seriously in my future classroom. The first step I would take to eliminate this problem would be to educate my students on plagiarism and cheating so there are no grey areas and they know the difference between ethical and unethical. I would also inform them about my classroom policies as well as the schools policies in place in regards to academic dishonesty. Subscribing to anti-plagiarism software such as Turnitin, would be another way to solve the issue of academic dishonesty when implementing technology into the classroom

Technology has become a central force in our society reaching all aspects of our life. As a result, technology literacy has become a vital skill necessary to function in the Information Age. Educators are given the task of preparing our next generation for their place in our technology-rich society. In order to meet these needs, teachers must incorporate technology in the classroom and students are encouraged to become conversant in different aspects of technology.

The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) has developed a set of technology standards that define what you need to know in order to use technology effectively and prepare students to be 21st century digital citizens. While I think each standard is important in its own way, there is one that stands out to me in particular; Promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility. Since technology is such a big part of society, it is vital that students learn the proper etiquette when using it and how to access it in a safe, legal, and ethical manner.

I strongly agree with the label "digital native" for todays youth. We have been born into the Information Age where technology is an integral part of our society. Although we still have to acquire technological skills, we have been surrounded by technology since birth. I agree with this label because I have seen the difference between myself, a digital native, and some of my professors, digital immigrants, and the way we use technology. For example, when I have to give a presentation in class, my first thought is to create a presentation on Powerpoint or Prezi. Using these programs allow me to save all of my information in one spot and present and share it easily. However, I still have professors that rely on hand writing their presentations given during lectures simply because they find the programs too complicated to use. While there are big differences between some of my professors and myself, I do not anticipate a drastic difference between me and my future students in terms of how we use technology. I feel this way because I consider myself a digital native and think technology will continue to have a large impact in all aspects of my life.

My prior experiences with technology are extremely limited. My high school did not allow the use of cell phones or personal computers at any point throughout the school day. We primarily used textbooks and any information our teachers provided for us. As a result, it wasn't until my freshman year at FSU that I received my first laptop and began using it in a classroom setting. Since then, I have gained some experience with technology by learning to use programs such as excel, google drive, power point and so on.

I hope to gain more experience using all sorts of technology and computer programs that will be useful in and outside of a classroom setting. As I mentioned before, my previous experiences with technology are very limited so I am interested in any opportunity to enhance my skills working with it. I would like to learn how to create presentations like the one shown in the beginning of class as well.
The results of my learning styles questionnaire did not come as a surprise to me. I am a very visual learner and do best with concrete and sequential ideas. However, I was interested to see that my results were very neutral. With the exception of being a visual learner, the results for the rest of the categories were more towards the middle of the scale.
